Bespoke Helical Staircase Gallery

Helical Staircases or curved staircases

Wow! Take a look at this glamorous, sweeping Helical Staircase that we designed for a customer in Leicestershire. The white treads and risers contrast beautifully with the regal red runner, and the decorative wrought iron spindles, capped with a continuous Oak handrail with volute starters, finish this traditional helical staircase perfectly.

Helical Staircases or curved staircases

In stark contrast to the curved staircase above, this Oak Helical Staircase was designed for a customer who wanted a contemporary look to suit their ultra-modern house. So we used continuous Oak handrails with drop starters and mitred corners to complement the sleek curved glass balustrading.

Helical Staircases or curved staircases

This client knew exactly what they wanted; a stunning helical staircase for a traditional farmhouse, made from American Black Walnut with white painted turned spindles. The continuous Walnut handrails have volute starters and wreath corners. They love their helical staircase so much it features every year, hung with Christmas decorations, on their Instagram page.

Helical Staircases, curved staircases in Oxfordshire

The brief - 'design a helical staircase around an Olive tree growing in the hallway.' This spectacular house near Henley-on Thames, was built on a floodplain, so the ground floor was raised up on stilts to sit 3m above ground, where the tree was planted in a huge container. The helical staircase is made from Limed Oak with curved glass balustrading topped with a continuous Limed Oak handrail.

Here we have a spectacular helical staircase, made from beautiful American Black Walnut, that I designed for a Manchester United & England footballer. It has curved glass balustrading topped with a continuous Walnut handrail with drop starters and mitred corners.

Helical STAIRCASES, OR Curved STAIRCASES

What are Helical Staircases?

Helical Staircases, or curved staircases, are amongst the most glamorous of all staircase designs. With their wide, feature bottom steps and show-off volute newels, the sweeping curve of a helical staircase wafts you gently up to bed . . .

Frequently Asked Questions

A Helical is similar to a spiral, except whereas a spiral curves around a central pole, a helical curves around a cylindrical void. An example of a spiral would be the tread on a screw, whereas an example of an helical would be more like a corkscrew

To make a helical staircase, we first construct the two strings. Imaging if you will, the arc of a circle, and each string will be approximately one quarter of a circle. The outer string has a greater radius than the inner string; typically the radius of the outer string might be 2m, and the radius of the inner string 1m. The strings are fixed to ground floor and to the trimmer on the first floor, positioned approximately 1m apart to give a 1m wide staircase. The treads are fixed between the strings and the balustrading fixed on top of the stings. We then construct two continuous curved handrails to go on top of the balustrade.

Depending of the actual design plan, and the materials we use, our helical staircases, or curved staircases, start from around £40,000 for a curved staircase with Oak treads and 15mm Toughened Glass balustrading topped with a continuous Oak handrail. We can also include a matching gallery landing into the design if required.

Here's what our customers have to say ...

"Your guys have done a fantastic job!"

"The workmanship displayed is quite exceptional"

An Oak Spiral Staircase we designed and built for a customer in the Cotswolds. Featuring a curved outer string & antique bronze powder coated spindles.

"Just to say that the staircase has turned out to be just as good – if not better – than we had hoped for. Your guys have done a fantastic job, and are a credit to your company. Thanks Peter."

"The workmanship displayed is quite exceptional"

In 2016, I was invited to tender for the manufacture and installation of a truly unique staircase designed by leading architects Sanie + Hopkins.

The project was an engineering marvel: solid stainless steel strings, 40mm thick and nearly 4m long, required absolute precision. To allow the solid Oak treads to be wedged onto them, the strings had to be perfectly straight; even a millimetre of deviation would have compromised the entire structure. It was a formidable challenge, but one we relished. I remain immensely proud to have contributed to what became a multi-award-winning project.
