Frequently Asked Questions
Whilst we can, and have, designed and made entire staircases from glass, in practice, we very rarely have a demand for this type of staircase. Whilst they may look stunning, they are impractical to use, and many people find them to scary to even walk on! Today, when we talk about Glass staircases we are usually referring to staircases with glass balustrading. Typically we use 10mm Toughened Glass which is inset between the handrail & baserial.
At the time I designed my first staircase in 2000, the majority had either Oak or wrought iron balustrading. The trend for Glass balustrading on staircases started in the UK around 20 years ago, and it's showing no sign of slowing down. In fact, around 60% of all our bespoke staircase designs, and 80% of all our staircase renovations, involve glass balustrading.
Depending of the design, size and materials used, our Glass Staircases start from around £14,000 for a typical straight staircase, against a wall on one side, with 12 Oak treads and risers, Oak baserails & handrails, and 10mm Toughened Glass inset in between. We can also include a matching gallery landing into the design, if required. All the Oak is pre-finished in our workshop with 2 spray coats of Morrell's lacquer, and all the treads receive an additional anti-slip coating. And the finished staircase comes with a full 10 Year Guarantee.
